2024 Upgrades

In summer 2024, we will be working to upgrade the database used to manage the digital signage. This is a major upgrade and will require an upgrade to all versions of Content Player as well as changes to Content Manager – Web and Desktop.

Highlights:

  • Upgrade database from version 5.16 to 6.x
  • Upgrade all Content Player applications to version 6.4.2
  • Remove all instances of Content Manager Desktop installations
    • Content Manager Web will no longer be available to use.
  • Begin using Content Experience Builder
    • This is VERY similar to Content Manager Desktop

Process:

  1. The PSU Digital Signage Service Managers will determine a “content freeze” date for changes in Content Manager.
    1. NOTE: This content freeze affects changes in Content Manager ONLY. Changes made in the Cloud Library will continue to work and update on signs. Emergency Messaging will also continue to work.
  2. At this date, we will make a copy of the existing database to import into the new database.
    1. NOTE: Any changes made to the existing database after this point WILL NOT be transferred to the new version and will be lost when the player machines connect to new database.
    2. Content Freeze was conducted on August 5, 2024. If you are still using the older Content Manager to manage content, any changes made since August 5 WILL NOT be in the new Content Experience Builder system and will need to be rebuilt.
  3. Service Managers will deploy content to all the locations in the new database
    1. Signs will not receive new content until Content Player is upgraded to latest version and the environment pointers are changed to connect to the database.
  4. Local IT Units will upgrade players to the latest version of Content Player (currently 6.4.2)
  5. Local IT Units/Sign Managers will begin using Content Experience Builder (CXB) for content updates and deploy content as needed.
    1. Download Content Experience Builder or Set up the RemoteApp access.
    2. Content Manager (Web and Desktop) will be discontinued and unavailable

Individual Unit Responsibilities:

  • Ensure no changes are made in Content Manager during the content freeze.
  • Upgrade Content Players to latest version
  • Confirm player machines are connected to new system
  • Check for any technical issues on existing signs.
  • Continue updating signs as usual – using Content Experience Builder.
