All digital signs start with a template and display content within the regions of this template. These can be very basic where a single image uses the entire screen (full-screen) to display, or they can be much more complex. Interactive displays, for example, require a complex combination of regions, content, and touchable areas to enable the intended interactivity.
Content examples:
Digital signs can display a variety of information and data. The most common is to display images advertising events, programs, or other information, but signs can be more dynamic if desired. Below are just a few of the types of content currently in use on signs across Penn State:
- Images
- Videos
- Personnel Directory
- Maps (static and interactive)
- Upcoming Events
- Building Floorplans
- Campus/College News
- Department News and Information
- Room Reservations
- Local, National, and World News
- Local Weather
- RSS Feeds
- Websites (Starfish Waiting Rooms, Maps, etc.)
- Emergency Messages
- All Digital Signs at Penn State are required to have this feature enabled. Emergency Messaging will be added automatically by the Digital Signage team when your sign is created.
Template Designs:
Below are a few examples of some template designs. Your unit can design a template to suit your needs. The only requirement we make is that the main content area be a 16:9 aspect ratio (max 1920×1080 pixels) so that any content can be easily shared and used on multiple signs.
Templates are created and edited using Content Manager (Web or Desktop version). Not everyone in your unit will have access to this program, so check with your main signage contact for more information about who can make template edits. More than one template can be added to a sign to create a variety of designs and experiences.
